How long will the increase in food stamps last?
Recently, Biden Administration announced they have revised the nutrition plan and the new rules will increase food stamps benefits. There’s always been a stigma around welfare especially for people of color with a lot of kids like myself. I share my personal journey from being homeless living in a hotel to currently living on welfare. I receive food stamps, Medicaid, and Section 8. People see my content on various platforms and assume I’m bragging or being dramatic. When in reality, my content is to engage, entertain and educate people about the many resources readily available to them. Especially in times like today where Covid has impacted our world! Not many people know there are many resources available to them to get closer to financial freedom.
Not Sufficient Enough Food Stamps
More than three-quarters of households exhaust their benefits in the first half of the monthly cycle. I share my food stamps haul to give people ideas and tips on what to buy that will last longer. Typically for my family size, I will bulk shop so this will last for a few months. For my family size, I was receiving the maximum allotment due to the Covid Crisis. Being that my family had to be quarantined which was mandated by our state. I would have to spend over $800 in one month! For our regular benefits, we only receive $709 a month for a family of 8.
Our basic monthly stipend in food stamps is plenty for our family as I do buy in bulk. I also shop on Amazon as some items in bulk are cheaper and more accessible. I live in a metropolitan area of Reading, PA. Having access to healthy foods will have to be another blog post to discuss. The lack of healthy foods is an issue in itself within urban communities. I additionally try to utilize coupons, apps, and cashback rewards to save money on other necessities.
Urban Communities Cost of Food
The last revision, in 2006, assumed an adult woman would spend $18.58 a month on low-fat milk and fewer than 50 cents on cheese, according to an analysis by Parke Wilde of Tufts University. In 2020, for milk, it’s $5 per gallon in some locations. In urban areas like NYC, Philadelphia, DC, Baltimore local neighborhood grocery stores inflated prices for profit. Which goes into an issue with the lack of healthy food sources.
The plan assumes that SNAP families will get 99 percent of their beans from a can. Among the other convenience foods that are more accessible and available for most single-parent households.
Your food stamps benefit will be a PERMANENT increase, unlike the covid relief increase. You will receive up to a 25 percent increase in your benefits. Under the new rules, average monthly benefits, $121 per person before the pandemic, will rise by $36. Benefits are awarded on a sliding scale. The new maximum will rise to $835 a month for a family of four, an increase of 21 percent.⠀
